Our Unique Home and Shop for Sale
As many of you know, Susan became involved in Vävstuga Swedish Weaving Studio in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, two-and-a-half years ago. This has worked out so well that we have reluctantly decided to sell our house and shop in Ohio and relocate to Massachusetts. Ernie will reopen a smaller shop in Shelburne Falls to continue his writing, video and design work, as well as host small, more private classes.
It is with great reluctance that we sell our property. As we struggled with the idea close friends said, "you should let your students and friends know, for who will better appreciate your unique home than fellow woodworkers and weavers." Therefore, we are offering it first to you before we put it on the general real estate market.
We are offering our House and Shop as a package. We will also sell the machinery, benches and fixtures as a turnkey package to anyone wanting to continue the woodworking school. Perhaps you would like to operate a custom furniture business or simply want a super shop of your own. If any of these options are to your liking we will negotiate a fair price.
If woodworking is not your game, the renovated barn that houses the shop would be excellent for many commercial purposes such as an insurance agency, repair facility or office suite. It could also be turned into a very unique house.
We are offering the house and shop for $349,000.
Please call (440) 548-3491 or email.

South side of master bedroom wing has walkout plantation doors to private patio with timber framed pergola covered with wisteria. Doors are tenoned white oak with hand forged hardware but have screen wire on inside to give marvelous ventilation without bugs. Bathroom windows next to pergola are stained glass with a wisteria motif to carry the theme.

Screen porch surrounded by another patio provide tranquil leisure hours with panoramic views.

Inside The House

The door under Wayne's carving opens into a handy "mud room" with plenty of Shaker pegs for coats, shelf for hats and bench to put on shoes and boots. Door to right leads to basement weaving studio. Living room is straight ahead, formal dining room to right and kitchen/screen porch to left. Let's start with the kitchen.

View of kitchen from doorway to screen porch. Cabinets are of curly maple with 2" maple counters. Mud room and formal dining room to left.

Another view of kitchen from everyday dining area. Good work triangle with prep counter center, refrigerator, two drawer dishwasher and corner sink right. Stove is center and pantry storage cupboards and more work area left. Wilsonart floor.

Everyday dining area with screen porch left. Black rectangle on ceiling by corner cupboard is Metalbestos chimney for optional wood stove.

Screen porch from kitchen dining area.

1840s Chinese motif of formal dining room is built around rosewood dining table bought in Hong Kong many years ago. We will always have fond memories of romantic dinners by candle and original oil lamp chandelier (which is excluded).

Open landscape living room as seen from kitchen doorway. It is really two rooms and offers endless furniture and decor groupings. All woodwork throughout the house is milled from heavy poplar, as can be seen in window detail photo below. Base molding is 4" wide with an 1 1/2" Ogee Back band at the outside edge.

Built ins offer lots of storage space, book shelving and display space.

Far end of living room which is really a 14' x 14' room in itself.
Second Floor

Second floor has three bedrooms and two baths. Bedroom at end of hall and on left share bath through second door on left. Guest room right has its own private bath.

Very private guest room has lots of closet space and small private bath.

Master Bedroom & Office Wing
In 2000 we added a master bedroom, bathroom, closet area and lofted office for Susan. It is really a separate building connected by a breezeway but there is a full basement under the breezeway and addition which connects to the basement of main house.

We have always liked the late Georgian Style in which only the fireplace wall was paneled. Always painted, color really carries the style! The fireplace is a Rumford and will put a positive heat value in the room. The stove would have been added by 1840 and does a much more efficient job of heating. The bi-fold shutters are true to the period and do a great job of further insulating the fenestration. There are 99 raised panels in the room. Wide period style hardwood flooring is quarter sawn beech.

Paint carries the style!

The lofted office is above the bathroom and closet areas. The spiral stairs and railing were laid up by a builder in Maine but I turned the 10 newel posts and 65 balusters. Second carving by Wayne Barton over doorway at end of breezeway just visible.
Lofted office as seen from balcony. It has great lighting from skylights and track lighting. Ample storage in Shaker style built-in cabinets at each side. Plenty of file drawers supported on Accuride 150lb rated slides.

Closet/changing room has full complement of built-in storage, closet space and washer and dryer. Leaded glass window by Betsy Roll.

Master bath has leaded windows by Charlie and Carol Weikert with wisteria motif, soaker tub, two vanities and a shower/steam bath unit.

Basement/Weaving Studio

Walkout basement is 12 courses of block deep and has finished weaving studio with drop ceiling and excellent lighting. Wood stove for auxiliary heat. Could be family room once you add a billiard or ping pong table.

In the basement area there is also another laundry room, root cellar mechanical room and a large unfinished area under the addition.
Barn Workshop
The workshop is a rehabbed dairy barn built in 1918 and is zoned Commercial. It has two floors each with 1,750 square for a total of 3,500. There is an additional third story for storage. The first floor has bathroom, gallery area and sales room plus the turning workshop. The second floor has a bench room and machine room.
