Email to Past Students

Dear Fellow Woodworker

We have designed a completely new website which we are building ourselves. This gives us much greater control over things as we can make changes instantly without having to contact our “web guy.” We have used “open source” software for both the site and the shopping cart. Being free, the price was right. Speaking of Shopping Carts, a nice feature of the new site is an interactive Cart that allows safe encrypted purchases on line.

An open source shopping cart, of necessity, has to cover a wide variety of situations. The result is that things can be a bit quirky at times, such as free shipping for a course. Knock on wood, I think everything works o.k., but please inform us of any problems you encounter, and “the old web guy” (me) will try to fix them. The best thing about the new site is that we have lots of color photos and plan on putting in more. This allows you to see what things will look like much better than in a black & white brochure of old.

We have an exciting curriculum laid out for the 2006 with ample courses for you to choose from. Most exciting is our new Home Study Sharpening Series on DVD which allows you to take Basic Sharpening for $14.95 post paid. A second disk covers the Tormek Machine and Turning Tool Sharpening. To encourage web sign up we are giving the Basic Sharpening Course (titled, Making Your Tools as Sharp as Your Mother-in-Law’s Tongue) free to those signing up for any woodworking course over the web. To check out the Home Study Program go to index.php?id=94.

Another exciting new course, Joinery at its Best, grew out of a private student I had last year. While I believe that everyone should be grounded in handtools before moving on to machines, most people just want to build some furniture. There are many things, such as mortise and tenon joints, that most people will always do by machine. Others are worth doing by hand. Joinery at its Best steers a very practical path through this minefield, allowing you to cut a trial mortise and tenon joint but immediately moving to the machine. Dovetails, on the other hand, we will cut by hand. However, we will also discuss and even demonstrate the machine cut dovetail alternative. To check out Joinery at its Best go to index.php?id=46.

I invite your thoughts and input for our new site. Please forward any edits, corrections or glitches to the old webmaster at erconover@conoverworkshops.com. Our shopping cart has the ability for people to write reviews. I invite and encourage anyone who has taken courses to contribute to this forum. Above all I look forward to your visit to my shop this year.

With best regards,

Ernie Conover
